GREAT VINEYARDS HAVE VOICES THAT RESONATE WITH DEPTH AND CLARITY

Vöcal came to life in 2012 when the Lilo Vineyard Pinot Noir became available. Ian Brand and I had been conspiring to do something together, neither of us knew what, but something... 2013 our first harvest in Lilo was almost perfect, beautiful fruit: character, structure and tension.  In 2014 Richard Alfaro generously asked us to participate in the first harvest of the new planting of Grüner Veltliner in his Vineyard also in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Today we also produce Cabernet and Gros Verdot from the historic Bates Ranch and Enz Vineyards respectively.

Vöcal is about the natural tension in the vineyard between grape and ground, the sun and rain, and the hand of man. Each contribution is important. We believe in a thoughtful dialogue in place of dogma when it comes to making the wines.  These are vineyards influenced by the Monterey Bay. A deep sea trench that is a feature of the geological event that shaped the Salinas valley and the Santa Cruz Mtn Range, resulting in cold upwelling of water - fog and wind is abundant in a region statistically a desert due to low average rainfall. Wonderful conditions for agriculture in the flats of the valley floor, and brilliant for viticulture in the bench land and mountain sites of the coastal ranges; this is the voice behind Vöcal.

2017 ENZ VINEYARD "SABROSO"

The Enz Vineyard is home to the Cabernet Pfeffer mother block. Historically, it's also been incorrectly referred to as 'Pinot St. George'. It's origin is a mystery, but as best we can tell it's a field blend based around an unknown Bordeaux variety, possibly sold by the 19th century San Jose nurseryman William Pfeffer. We picked this fruit from a 35 year old, own-rooted, dry farmed and organically farmed (non-certified) block planted from cuttings. 100% whole cluster fermented in concrete. Originally planted in the 1890s and purchased by Bob and Sue Enz in 1967, the Enz Vineyard is the only planting in the Lime Kiln Valley AVA. "Sabroso" is a Spanish word that translates to "tasty". Enjoy fresh or with a slight chill.

2016 ALFARO VINEYARD GRÜNER VELTLINER

Richard Alfaro's Vineyard sits at 550' elevation, south-west facing, the soil is composed of mostly sand and stones: mountain erosion being in the lower slopes of the range. Redwoods, coastal shrub and pines fill out the borders. The 2016 vintage was the first year we had a healthy yield in the vineyard despite continuing drought.  The lessons gained in the previous two years of working with the vineyard and the varietal have resulted in the best wine we’ve produced from the site to date.

2014 LILO VINEYARD PINOT NOIR

The Lilo Vineyard perches 800' over the Monterey bay. Ringed by redwoods that act as a wind break and influence the vineyard. The vineyard is a south facing half bowl with a top soil of loose poor sandy loam. Vines are in two parcels, one 20 year old and one 12 year old.

The 2014 vintage was very difficult, it was the third year of an extreme drought. We saw an early bud break followed by an early set, we followed that trajectory to it’s natural finish and had an early harvest of excellent fruit.

2015 BATES RANCH, CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Cabernet Sauvignon is legendary in the Santa Cruz Mountains, The Montebello Ridge is home to some of the most sought after vines in all of the new world, and the ridges planted by Paul Masson in the early 1900s produced California's first cult wines. Forty miles south, tucked into the redwoods and live oak savannahs on the back side of Mount Madonna and cooled by the breezes off the Monterey Bay that come over Hecker Pass, Bates Ranch first came to quiet prominence in the bottlings of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards and Ahlgren Vineyards.

Vocal was lucky enough to be offered an allocation of hillside rows of Cabernet Sauvignon off the original dry farmed, own-rooted 1969 planting on the Ranch. The wine is spicy and rich and displays the chiseled elegance of old vine Cabernet refined in French Barrel.
